The size of a faceted stone includes many different factors. Not sure what the diamond was worth. It apparently was given to the State of Wyoming by the Kelsey Lake diamond company - not sure where it ended up - hopefully not in the governor's pocket - but that wouldn't surprise me. Be sure you verify anything you get from the BLM - they are government employees and don't always dig very deep. They gave DiamonEx some misinformation that cost us a few thousand $.

- Hello Warne, When I worked for DiamonEx, we had to hire a full-time landman to try to get access to the properties, but we never went after any of the placers so I don't know about access to any of these. Mining companies seldom are interested in placers (which I think is a mistake).
I thought the stream from Kelsey Lake on downstream would be very good because several diamonds were recovered from Fish Creek including a 6 carat stone during the early testing in that area. But most of the stream was never tested. Additionally, the Kelsey Lake kimberlite is deeply eroded implying that many diamonds (including large diamonds) had to be carried downstream.

I'm not aware of any Dakota company at Kelsey Lake - last I heard it belonged to the 2Bar7 ranch in Wyoming and these people were not interested in mining when we talked to them when I was working for DiamonEx.
Several large diamonds were found in northern California in the 1980s, so it is very likely you also had one. Most were found around Hayfork Creek. I looked at a breccia pipe in the Sierra Nevada for Western Archon in central Wyoming years ago, and it was very interesting. Many serpentinite with many breccia clasts and we recovered several diamond stability minerals but could never get anyone to bulk sample it for diamonds.
Hope you find many diamonds in the streams in the State Line district. Let me know how things turn out. The property situation in the area can be a nightmare.
